VCC and BCIT strikebound today

There are no no classes today at the various campuses of Vancouver Community College and BCIT.

That’s because support staff at VCC and Faculty at BCIT are staging a one-day strike, to back their contract demands for more money.

The weather is miserable as Faculty and union staff walk a picket line outside the downtown Vancouver campuses of BCIT and VCC.

Joan Walker at the BCIT campus says they are asking for “2 and 2 like the other public service employees and other educational institutions but my understanding is that we’ve been offered nothing, zero and zero, and as a faculty we’ve been asked to find our own savings from within and we can’t, we’re already working to our max and under-resourced as it is.”

A similar scene is playing out at Vancouver Community College but they are just a single percentage point apart at the table.

Meanwhile, at Simon Fraser University support staff there are starting a week of job action with a morning rally outside the W.A.C. Bennett Library.
