Veterans’ care home switches to non-union employees

A Veterans’ care home is dropping unionized workers in favor of cheaper contract employees.

George Derby Centre Executive Director Janice Mitchell says that won’t result in worse care.

“We work very closely with our families and they mean a lot to us. It’s like with any change, it can be really difficult: the unknown. What I do know is that we’re committed to improving the quality of life and the quality of care that our residents deserve. “

But a number of families are upset with the move to drop unionized workers at the centre.

Caroline’s father fought in the Second World War, and she says he’s earned top care.

“It’s despicable, because these people deserve more. They were in the war and they’re old, they’re part of history, and they should be given the care that they have been receiving.”

The switch to unionized workers will be completed in April.

Services being contracted out include nutrition, clerical, housekeeping and activity workers.
