Victoria Police want to find the person who filled three childrens’ shoes with an unidentified meat-like substance and bones and left them on a popular beach in the capital.
Constable Mike Russell says investigators have confirmed the shoes did not contain human remains, now they want to find whoever was behind what Russell calls a sick hoax.
“We are now investigating and continuing to look into the circumstances around it, but looking at it from a public mischief point of view. The hoax caused a significant alarm to our community, and caused a lot of people a lot of worry, and also expended numerous police resources, as well as the coroners, pathologists, and many other people who helped out.”
Police closed off a popular beach at Clover Point for several hours while they investigated the find Thursday night.
Russell says public mischief carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
