Vietnam wows the crowds at a mostly peaceful start to the Celebration of Light

A Vancouver summer staple is back…

Vietnam took to the skies over English bay Saturday night — to open the 2012 Celebration of Light.

If you wanted the best seat in the house — you needed to get there early.

A walk along the shore — and you come across families, food and friends — like this group huddled in a makeshift sofa — made of sand.

“Every year! We’re here almost every time, right here in the middle right!”

The show itself — a blend of old and new — loud and soft…

From the classics — to the contemporary…

The reviews? Pretty positive…

“I’d say the whole thing was pretty good.”
“The finale was short and sweet, I like that too.”
“The entire show was fantastic.”

Brazil is next up Wednesday night.

Meantime, Vancouver Police are estimating more than 300,000 people took in the fireworks.

Constable Lindsey Houghton says there were no problems of note.

“We’ve had a few arrests for being drunk in public, couple of breaches of the peace — and we even took a bow and arrow off a young man who was bringing it down for some completely unknown reason.”

Houghton says alcohol was a major focus for officers, with several hundred liquor pour-outs.
