The volunteer Coast Guard auxiliary has a new name: The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.
They’ve also got a new base, at Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, and a new boat.
President Randy Strandt says the name reflects the organization’s separate identity from the Coast Guard.
He’s also paying homage to those who will lose their jobs at the Kitsilano base this fall.
“We are clear that we do support these men and women and recognize their professionalism, dedication and commitment to saving lives on the sea. And we stand with them in a shared mission going forward to continue saving lives at sea.”
The volunteer group will likely see an upturn in local calls, now that the nearest form of Coast Guard rescue will come from Richmond.
