VPD want stolen cell phones disabled

With a spike in cell phone robberies right across Canada, police organizations want to see government force cell phone companies to disable stolen phones.

Vancouver Police Constable Lindsey Houghton says each cell phone comes with a unique identification number, which can be flagged if stolen, and not reactivated.

“We’ve seen it succesfully implemented in numerous jurisdictions around the world, and thats why the Vancouver Police Department and other departments across Canada and even the United States, we’re calling on governments to create legislation to address the banning, the reactivation of stolen cell phones.”

Last year, there was a 37-percent increase in cell phone robberies in Vancouver,  many of them violent.
