Watts keeps an open mind regarding policing

The Mayor of the Municipality with BC’s largest RCMP Detachment says she is keeping an open mind when it comes to a regional police force.

Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts was asked what happens if other mayors holding out on signing the RCMP contract come to her with a workable regional policing plan, “I want to make sure that we get the best policing model possible. I want to ensure that we have best value for our taxpayers and I want to make sure that the public safety issues within our community are addressed. Those are the three pieces that I am particularly concerned about, so I am open to anything.”

Watts wants her community signed on in part because of the two year opt-out clause and avenues to pursue contract changes.

Hold-out Mayors on the Lower Mainland are meeting this week to look at a joint study into a regional force.
