BC’s Environment Minister says the Federal Government has a part to play in BC’s effort on an industry led oil spill response program.
Terry Lake says any oil spill or emergency response on land is clearly a provincial responsibility, but on the water, “That is kind of a shared responsibility. The Federal Government takes the lead in the marine environment. But of course, any spill that occurs out there, should it wash up onto the shores, becomes a provincial problem so we are working with the Federal Government on the marine side to ensure that they are increasing the prevention and response regime in the marine area as well.”
Starting in January, Lake and Energy Minister Rich Coleman will meet with industry leaders to craft an oil spill response and clean up plan.
World class spill response and clean up is one of the five demands BC has placed on the Northern Gateway Oil Pipeline.
