Whale carcass removed from beach

The carcass of a baby hump back whale has been removed from the beach in White Rock.

Coast Guard spokesperson Dan Bate says for public safety reasons it was decided to remove the whale, “So, an operation to move the whale by Coast Guard Hovercraft was completed. The crew from Coast Guard Station Sea Island moved the whale to a distance off the beach and anchored it in deeper water. So, at this time, the carcass is marked by some floats.”

Bate says Wednesday, marine mammal experts and staff from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will examine the body.

The whale was found on the beach Tuesday morning and may have had fishing gear wrapped around it.
