Where to put the shipyard workers when they arrive

With North Vancouver Mayor Darrell Mussatto expressing concerns this week about whether his municipality has the infrastructure necessary to accommodate the influx of workers moving to work at Seaspan Shipyards, Liberal MLA Ida Chong says the answer may lie in opening the door for more private development.

“You may recall a number of years ago Minister Coleman did speed up the process so that we could get more private development, private sector dollars coming in to help build more and more housing. And I believe that will continue as we take a look at the needs that will certainly be here in the Lower Mainland.”

As a result of the eight billion dollar contract Seaspan won in January to build Coast Guard vessels, it’s expected several thousand workers will be moving to the region.
