Wildfire burning south of Fort St. John

We already have activity on the wildfire front as crews battle a blaze just south of Fort St. John.

Fire Information Officer Jill Chimko says gusting winds have the fire already pushing forty hectares in size.

“We do have some homes in the area and that is the main focus for us right is structure protection we do have high confidence of success that they will be just fine but that is the area we are focusing on right now.”

Chimko says the rising temperatures might be new but the wildfire risk is already rising.

“We are starting to see it warm up there and it is still very dry conditions and especially with that wind in the area things can change from controlled to uncontrolled very quickly.”

She says three tanker groups, 22 firefighters, plus the Taylor Fire Department are fighting the flames.
