Woman busted for concealing OxyContin in underwear

Is that OxyContin in your pants, or are you just happy to see me?

That’s probably not how the conversation went as a 48-year-old Chilliwack woman was caught allegedly trying to smuggle 110 OxyContin tablets over the Sumas border crossing by stashing the pills in her underwear.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection made the discovery after the woman, crossing the border on foot, was selected for secondary inspection.

An agency spokesperson said the woman, identified as Judy Veronica Peters, confessed to carrying the restricted narcotics during questioning, leading to a physical search and seizure of the tablets.

OxyContin is the brand name of a formula for oxycodone, a semi-synthetic narcotic used to relieve pain. In high doses, or when combined with alcohol, oxycodone can cause addiction, respiratory or circulatory collapse and death.

“This arrest reflects the imaginative ways that criminals will attempt to smuggle their narcotics across the border,” acting area port director Deborah Engels said in a news release.

Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations are probing the incident.
