Young mom’s body found

The estranged husband of a slain Burnaby mother has been charged in relation to her death, after her body was found in a suitcase floating in the Fraser River.

RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the integrated homicide investigation team (IHIT) said Yating (Lancy) Hu was confirmed dead after two boaters phoned in to report a suspicious suitcase on the Fraser River just west of Steveston on Aug. 27.

Hu’s husband, Zhongming (James) Mou, 35, has been charged with first-degree murder, Pound added.
“They did have a history of marital issues,” Pound said without disclosing any evidence related to the murder.

Hu, a 27-year-old mother of two, was initially reported missing by her husband, who said he last saw her when he dropped her off near her apartment in the Metrotown area. But he later changed his story, telling police he saw her last on the morning of July 16 as she left their shared home in Coquitlam.

Pound said police withheld the discovery of the body from Hu’s family and the public in order to advance their investigation.

“Lancy’s parents … want to say that this is providing them with just a little piece of closure,” Pound said. “They realized that there may not be some good news for them at the end of this, but in their minds they have found her.”

Mou will appear in Port Coquitlam provincial court today at 9:30 a.m.
