“Supernatural,” “Borgias,” “Southland” Renewed

With the TV network up fronts set to hit shortly, time has run out on their opportunity to make decisions about the fate of certain shows. Thankfully they appear to have been in a generous mood this week with numerous series scoring another season.

The CW
The CW has given renewals to three of its long performing and solid rating dramas – “Supernatural” will get an eighth season, “The Vampire Diaries” a fourth and “90210” a fifth.

The fates of “Nikita,” “The Secret Circle,” “Ringer,” “Hart of Dixie” and “Gossip Girl” are unknown at this time but it’s expected at least three of them will strike out.

Southland
TNT has renewed the L.A. police drama “Southland” for a ten-episode fifth season scheduled to air from February 2013.

Reviews for the series remain good, and ever since its move to TNT in 2010 the ratings have held steady albeit at only one-quarter to one-third that of the network’s top rating L.A. cop drama “The Closer”.

The Borgias
Showtime have renewed “The Borgias”, their Jeremy Irons-led take on the corrupt Italian Renaissance papal family, for a full ten-episode third season. Neil Jordan will remain as executive producer and writer/director of certain episodes.

The first season averaged 3.2 million viewers across platforms, the second season premiere has earned an estimated 2.6 million viewers to date across encores, On Demand and other platforms along with fairly solid critical acclaim. Production will resume this Summer in Budapest for airing in Q2 2013.
