The 2011 Emmy Award Winners

After years of being dominated by cable shows, the major broadcast networks made a surprise comeback this year with certain shows scooping awards at TV’s night of nights.

ABC’s comedy “Modern Family” won all five categories it was nominated in including best comedy series, best writing/directing in a comedy and best supporting actor/actress in a comedy. Melissa McCarthy and Jim Parsons, the leading stars of CBS’ “Mike and Molly” and “The Big Bang Theory” respectively, took the best actor and actress in a comedy gongs.

On the drama side Julianna Margulies won for best actress in a drama in CBS’ “The Good Wife”. Kyle Chandler scored best actor for NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” while the show also took a writing award. Peter Dinklage won best supporting actor for his role as Tyrion Lannister in “Game of Thrones”, while Margo Martindale won best supporting actress for “Justified”.

Martin Scorsese scored a directing nod for his work on the pilot of “Boardwalk Empire”, while AMC’s “Mad Men” took the best drama. “The Daily Show” and “The Amazing Race” took best variety and reality series respectively.

Finally on the mini-series front it was “Downton Abbey” that dominated with best TV movie/miniseries, best supporting actress for Maggie Smith, and best writing for the category. HBO’s “Mildred Pierce” scored best supporting actor/best actress nods for Guy Pearce and Kate Winslet. Barry Pepper won best actor for “The Kennedys”.
