CanWIT BC Presents Starting your Start up

Industry research shows women who lead startups have a higher chance of succeeding than men. Why then, are women so underrepresented in the technology startup scene?

Founding your own tech company can be a daunting and elusive task. Brenda Bailey Gershkovitch knows this first hand as she has launched two of them: Silicon Sisters and Deep Fried Entertainment.

Brenda will explore the seemingly endless decisions to be made and questions to be answered—ranging from what type of legal entity to form, choosing your business partner(s) and how to know whether your idea is strong enough—to how to take those first steps and whether to draw a salary in the first year or go without.

In sharing her story of starting two successful technology companies and what she has learned from the process, CanWIT attendees will find out about:

  • Innovation – what does that really mean?
  • Growing your company – the pros and cons of organic versus staged growth strategies
  • The difference between being unfocussed and pivoting
  • Building culture – a few things to watch for
  • Black hat planning – things start out being exciting and positive, but can also go badly. How do you plan for the worst case scenario?
  • Building your supports
  • Building your team
  • Going all in
  • The challenge of work-life balance
  • What tools have proven helpful and sharing resources
