The Lean Thinking Organization

Networking begins 6:00. The talk starts at 6:30.

We will be in the Welch Room on the 4th floor.

DESCRIPTION
Lean and Agile have often been applied in organizations as process improvements or efficiency initiatives. But such limited approaches often fail to fully address issues. In order to truly increase the level of efficiency in an organization through Lean, new ways of thinking must be adopted.

What is required to scale new ways of working across a Lean organization doing intellectual and creative activities? What behaviors and new perspectives from leaders are needed? What factors are needed to maintain focus on customer value, employee development, continuous improvement and innovation? What are the limits of applying lessons learned from Lean manufacturing into software development? In this talk, Lawell will draw on his experience guiding the transition to Lean/Agile in the Business Intelligence unit of SAP here in Vancouver and discuss some of the ideas.

THE SPEAKER
Lawell Kiing is currently senior director of engineering in the Business Intelligence development unit in SAP, which acquired Business Objects at the end of 2007. He joined Business Objects in 2004. His current responsibilities include facilitating the Lean/Agile implementation for the unit globally and helping projects to become more productive and successful. Lawell has been in the computing industry since 1988 after he graduated from UBC with a degree in Computer Science. He has worked in various companies including IBM (12 years), Corel and even a startup, holding various development and leadership positions.
