A grieving daughter’s rage

Varinder Badh confronted the man accused of causing the hit-and-run death of her parents in July 2008 at the Surrey Provincial Court yesterday.

Badh shouted at Ravinder Singh Binning, 29, in the hallway of the courthouse, calling him a coward and reminding him of her family’s grief.

Binning is alleged to have been driving the car that killed Badh’s parents, Dilbag Singh, 61, and Bakhshish Kaur Badh, 60.

“It is very difficult for us to be here,” said Badh, who was accompanied by other family members. “It resurfaces a lot of emotion, anger and rage especially because if (he) had been banned from driving and had he not been driving, my parents would still be here.”

Binning pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of flight from a police officer, obstruction of a police officer and impaired driving for a March 15, 2009 incident that happened just eight months after the fatal crash that killed Badh’s parents.

The couple was returning from their daughter Rupi’s engagement party when their red BMW was rear-ended at high speed by a white Acura at the 8500-block of 128th Street. Their car then slammed into a pole, killing the couple at the scene.

Varinder and Rupi, who was behind the wheel, were also injured. The two occupants of the Acura emerged from the wreck and fled the scene.

Binning is charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene. He remains free on bail until his trial in February.

The family’s presence yesterday was to send a message, Badh said.

“We wanted to make sure that he knew we weren’t going anywhere and that we were going to continue advocating for this,” she said. “His failure of acknowledgement is the frustration.”
Binning is back in court Dec. 16 for sentencing for the 2009 incident.
