Abbott defends Bill 22

Bill 22 is a chance for B.C. teachers and their employers to re-start stalled contract talks after a year of no progress.
So says education minister George Abbott, while abroad in China.
Speaking on CKNW’s “The World Today Weekend,” Abbott says the bill allows the two sides to finally reach an agreement through an appointed mediator.

“For me, ending phase 1 after six months of disruption of the lives of students in B.C. was entirely timely.”

The teachers have slammed the bill for undermining the education system and their bargaining rights.
Union members are in the midst of deciding their next phase of job action – adding a decision might not come down until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
