B.C. experiences slow fire season

VANCOUVER – The B.C. government is calling this summer the slowest fire season in a decade.

Fire information officer Alyson Couch says B.C. has experienced about 500 wildfires to date this summer, compared to 1,500 over the same period of time last year.

Couch says there are fewer fires this year because B.C. experienced a cold, wet spring and fewer lightening storms in the summer.

She says as a result the province has been able to send about 2,000 firefighters to other Canadian provinces and U.S. states.

Couch says the province has also spent about half of what it spent on fighting wildfires last summer.

She says last summer the province spent more than $ 100 million on fighting wildfires compared to about $ 50 million this year.
