VANCOUVER – Workers at BC Place have voted 89 per cent in favour of strike action just over a month before the newly refurbished stadium in Vancouver is set to host the Grey Cup.
Members of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union include employees who work in maintenance, security, hosting, first aid and skilled trades jobs, and the union now has 90 days to serve 72-hour strike notice.
Last week’s strike vote involving Local 1703 was organized after contract talks with the BC Pavilion Corp. broke off in September.
Union president Darryl Walker says job security is the main issue and the union won’t accept concessions, contracting out or downgrading jobs from full time to part time.
The stadium recently completed a massive makeover, including the addition of a retractable roof, and the building reopened last Friday for a BC Lions game.
Fans at that game complained about long lineups at concession stands where employees reportedly didn’t show up for work, but the union says those workers are covered by a separate collective agreement.
