Beach Towers generates heat at Council

Cheers and heckles at Vancouver City Hall Tuesday evening where a public hearing on the re-zoning of the historic Beach Towers site on English Bay attracted dozens of people.

Devonshire Properties proposes to build 133 units of luxury rental on the existing Beach Towers site along Beach Avenue and Harwood Street.

The re-zoning would add almost 100-thousand square feet to what’s already the second densest residential block in the west end.

91-year-old Eleanor Hadley doesn’t like the plan, “This is only the beginning; it’ll be nothing but a jungle of buildings.”

Many tenants have told council there are dozens of vacancies in the four towers and wonder why the city would allow luxury units to be built when existing apartments go begging.

Council will vote on the re-zoning at a later date.
