Commissioner confident with RCMP act changes

The RCMP’s top cop is confident changes to the RCMP act will give him more power to personally deal with so-called “bad apples.”
Commssioner Bob Paulson admits cases such as Monty Robinson and Don Ray – have been embarrassing for the national police force.

“There will be an ability for the conduct authority, the person that’s bringing the prosecutor in other words, to appeal a sanction if it doesn’t reach the standard that he or she feels was warranted by the behaviour… and ultimately that gets appealed to the external review committee which is an independent body, and then to me… so I will have the ability to weigh-in on that, and we can do it much more efficiently.”

Paulson says the issue boils down to a “culture change” within the RCMP.
Just days before a public hearing on a proposal for a liquor license at the Mounties’ new E-division headquarters in Surrey – Paulson says he doesn’t understand the controversy.
Paulson re-affirms the “mess hall” is part of RCMP tradition.

“It’s not like we’re opening up a speak-easy or anything. It’s a regimental mess that will be used in accordance with the laws of British Columbia and in accordance the policies and the regulations of the RCMP.”
