End to natural gas drilling in Klappen

The provincial government has announced a deal with the Tahltan Central Council and Shell Canada to end natural gas drilling in the Klappen area of northwestern BC.

A four-year moratorium on the drilling expired today.

As part of the deal, Shell is immediately relinquishing its tenures and the government won’t issue any future petroleum and natural-gas tenures in the area.
In return, Shell is getting 20-million do

llars worth of royalty credits to build a new water recycling plant.

The Tahltan nation consider the Klappen or Sacred Headwaters area to have significant cultural, spiritual, and social values.

It includes the major salmon-bearing rivers like the Stikine, Nass, and Skeena.
