Family of toddler killed by truck speaks out ahead of driver’s sentencing

A day before the driver of a truck that killed their daughter is sentenced, the two-year old girl’s family is speaking out against the deal keeping him from having a criminal record.

William Mah will plead guilty to a lesser charge Friday.

Aoi Kazama was killed in August of 2009 when Mah’s truck hit her and her mother as they were crossing a downtown Vancouver intersection.

The lesser charge of driving without due care and attention carries a maximum fine of $ 5,000 and no criminal record.

The toddler’s aunt, Sheira Hallam-Barbieri, says Mah should still be charged with dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm.

“Before this accident, he had 16 ticketed fines and so, it is a concern that he has such a dangerous driving record. A child has lost their life and a woman has almost lost her life.”

Hallam-Barbieri says her family has been devastated by this tragedy and her brother says he misses his daughter every day.
