How to survive winter in Vancouver

With temperatures in the Lower Mainland dipping down to a brisk -7 C, things are definitely getting chilly on the West Coast.

Be thankful it’s not Prince George, where temperatures reached -30 C Wednesday. The Arctic cold is expected to continue to keep the temperatures low for the next couple of days.

With that in mind, here are five ideas to help you survive winter in the land of summer tires and snow umbrellas.

Hot chocolate:
Duck out of the cold and sample more than 50 different flavours of hot chocolate as you hop between 15 venues participating in the second annual Vancouver hot chocolate festival, which runs until Feb. 14. Visit cityfood.com/events/hotchocolate.

Hot yoga:
There is nothing like being in a steamy room with yogis wearing sweaty Lululemon pants to scare the cold right out of you.
It’s what the city is known for. Winter is dark and gloomy. Relax and rest your mind. Breathe. Thaw.

Burning Bruins:
Time to do some early cleaning in time for the Lunar New Year.
Light up a bonfire with Boston Bruins-related gear and huddle around to keep warm and to unfreeze those frozen Stanley Cup tears.

Jump on transit:
It takes forever (well minutes) to warm up the car so you might as well take transit.
Snuggle up with your neighbours to get body heat flowing.  The odour is a small price to pay for warmth.

Studs on bikes:
Take advantage of the city’s almost deserted separated bike lanes by equipping your cycle with some metal studs.

Hold on tight and enjoy the chilly ride.
