Layoffs at MS follow others in tech sector

Vancouver’s high tech industry has suffered yet another blow as Microsoft confirms layoffs in one of their city studios.

Microsoft issued a statement confirming they have trimmed staff after pulling the plug on two projects under production.

Vancouver NPA Councillor George Affleck says its a tough pill to swallow, “Really disappointed to see more layoffs in that sector. We had a motion put forward by the Mayor today that was addressing the high tech, the design community, the gaming community. I am worried that that motion from the Mayor was maybe too little too late for the community and we are seeing a major employment opportunity slide out of our city and move to Toronto.”

Microsoft wouldn’t comment on how many people were let go but industry websites are reporting as many as 35 staff were cut.

This comes after the closing of Rock Star and Radical Gaming Studios in Vancouver and layoffs at Capcom.
