VANCOUVER – A 24-year-old man described as having an on-and-off relationship with a murdered Simon Fraser University professor has now been charged with her death.
Matthew James Scott is accused of killing 37-year-old Melanie O’Neill, whose body was found inside her Vancouver home last July.
Police are saying little about how Scott and O’Neill knew each other, just that they were friends for the most part and that Scott sometimes stayed at O’Neill’s home.
He is charged with second degree murder, but police are not saying how O’Neill was killed or what the motive may have been.
Scott had previous contact with police, though investigators are not giving any details.
O’Neill was a popular associate professor of biological chemistry at SFU, had been teaching at the university for six years, and had been promoted to tenure before her death. (News1130)
