No anniversary gifts from opposition for Clark’s first year

Premier Christy Clark’s first year in office lacked focus and saw her continually shift her priorities, said opposition parties on the anniversary of her swearing-in ceremony.

“I think it’s been a pretty disappointing year. When she was elected, the premier promised a different style of office. But clearly it’s been more of the same from the Campbell regime,” said NDP caucus chair Shane Simpson.

Simpson said Clark has been “bouncing from issue to issue,” first focusing on families, then a jobs plan and currently touting fiscal prudence as her top agenda.

“We need to shrink the list of things that we do down to the core issues and have substantive plans on how to move forward,” Simpson said.

Conservative Leader John Cummins agrees that Clark’s inaugural year has lacked vision and direction.

“She’s trying to pass herself off as Conservative in nature, and currently she’s anything but. Taxes keep going up,” said Cummins.

Cummins said the government is mishandling the ongoing teachers dispute and lacked transparency after the sponsorship of BC Place fell through with Telus.

“They walked away from $ 35 million and they can’t get their story straight on why they did it. And this is a government that has had trouble telling the truth in the past,” Cummins said.

The latest Ipsos Reid polling data suggests the NDP have 44 per cent of the vote, followed by the Liberals (32 per cent) and the B.C. Conservatives (16 per cent).

On Tuesday, Clark announced her government had helped create nearly 40,000 new jobs in six months, a figure disputed by NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston, who said the real figure was closer to 2,000 when seasonally adjusted.
