Joining the likes of Trevor Linden and the B.C. members of the 2010 gold medal-winning hockey team in B.C.’s Sports Hall of Fame yesterday was a 1933 Chinese immigrant soccer team.
The team’s defeat over UBC is not only a story of their admirable athleticism, but of their determination at a time of severe immigrant inequalities.
Sue Griffin, president and CEO of the hall of fame, was proud of the team’s induction.
“It not only speaks about sport but about culture,” she said. “Through all the hardships and racial barriers sport was used as a vehicle and broke those barriers down.”
