RCMP severance payouts may fall to municipalities

The Federal Government is looking to eventually do away with RCMP severance packages but the problem is local governments weren’t told.

Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender local governments are realizing they will have to pay for any severance buy outs accepted by RCMP officers.

However Fassbender says figuring out the exact dollar figure of the potential cost is not easy.

“It really depends on how many members opt to actually take the buy out of their severance. I can’t even speculate on a figure but suffice to say any change means that there is an implication but that is a decision and a liability that chould be born by the federal government.”

Fassbender says the Union of BC Municipalities have sent a letter to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

He says the change was slipped into the last federal budget days before the new RCMP contract takes effect.
