SFU teaching assistants to stop working overtime Monday

Teaching assistants, sessional instructors and others at Simon Fraser University will start job action come Monday, with an overtime ban.

Teaching support staff union spokesperson Derek Sahota says after 26 months at the bargaining table with the employer – there has been “negligible” progress.

A release claims most members are graduate students who have an average overall annual income of $ 18,000, or $ 12,000 after tuition.

Sahota says members have no seniority rights and minimal benefits, adding they’re paid less than half of what a lecturer earns for the same work.

Among the other issues, he adds many don’t get access to work opportunities because of out-of-date posting and awarding rules.
