Still no pay for tree planters

It’s been two years now since a work camp in Golden was shut down after its tree planters were found working in horrible conditions and without pay.

But it’s still the same story: workers have yet to receive wages from the Surrey-based company.

The BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre says the tree planters are now owed about $ 260-thousand from Khaira Enterprises, after a provincial ruling back in Feburary 2011.

The centre says the government has paid back about half the wages so far, using deposits from Khaira’s previous bids on contracts — but not a cent yet from Khaira itself.

Labour advocates have pointed the finger at the BC government, saying it should pay the wages because it awarded Khaira the contract.

But the province maintains it should be Khaira.

The tree planters claimed they toiled upwards of 15 hours a day without proper food, water or shelter.
