A new supportive housing facility for people at risk of becoming homeless has opened in Vancouver, but not in the neighbourhood you might expect.
The 51-unit building is located amid million dollar homes on West 17th Avenue in Dunbar.
Area M.L.A Colin Hansen says the neighbourhood recognizes the need for it.
“The 51 new residents are welcomed and are very much a part of our commuity.”
Lorna Howes, director of housing for Vancouver Coastal Health – says facilities such as this one are cost effective.
“When we think about the rest of our system and our healthcare and where we spend those dollars, the cost of housing is substantially less than the cost of someone who is homeless and stuck in that revolving door.”
The City of Vancouver has pledged to end street homelessness by 2015.
