Teammate happy for Christine Sinclair

A Burnaby native has been chosen as Canada’s flag bearer for the Olympic closing ceremony after her inspiring performances for the women’s national soccer team.

Christine Sinclair’s hat-trick against the United States in the women’s Olympic soccer semi-final will likely be remembered as one of Canada’s finest individual performances of the London 2012 Olympics.

That game, and the women’s team’s subsequent bronze medal victory over France, have earned her the right to bear the flag at the closing ceremony.

Teammate and fellow BC native Sophie Schmidt says it’s a well-earned accolade.

“She’s a phenomenal human being, an amazing soccer player. One of the best in the world. Now that we’ve won the bronze, she’s getting the credit she’s always deserved.”

The bronze medal win was the first medal placing for Canada in a traditional team sport in the summer Olympics since 1936.
