According to the BC government, it’s a good news announcement that will save BC families a lot of money.
The NDP says it’s an example of a government run amok, and one that’s taking away the publics ability to question what it’s up to.
The BC Government has told the BC Utilities Commission to roll back an expected 7% rate increase next year.
Energy Minister Rich Coleman says enough work has been done finding efficiencies that next years increase can be limited to 1.4%.
NDP Energy critic John Horgan says what the government has really done here is short-circuit a consultation process planned for June, and the move isn’t about keeping rates affordable for families.
“Well if it wasn’t just rhetoric, what they did do was they intervened in an process which was supposed to start in June where experts were going to put forward evidence and make testimony about what is in the best interest of BC Hydro in the long term and what they have done today is to take away the publics ability to question what they are doing.”
He says all this is merely deferred accounting and one day someone will have to pay the piper for mismanagement at Hydro.
