Top 10 car thief gets four-year sentence

VANCOUVER – A woman who was on the list of Top 10 Most Wanted car thieves in B.C. has been handed a four-year prison sentence.

Stephanie Rene Deschene (Day-Shane) was arrested in May but recently pled guilty to 13 charges that included break and enter and driving while disqualified.

Sgt. Gord Elias of IMPACT — B.C.’s auto-crime team — says the 20-year-old woman’s attempts to steal vehicles became dangerous for the public and police.

He says that in one instance in Merritt, Deschene almost ran over a Mountie with a stolen car when the officer responded to a break-and-enter report at a home.

In another case in Sicamous, she ran over the leg of a man who was trying to stop her from stealing his pickup truck.

Deschene’s recent four-month crime spree also involved thefts in Surrey, Langley, Kelowna, Kamloops and Pritchard.
