Two fires in one week at Vancouver elementary school

A fire at a Vancouver school is under investigation–and fire officials say it’s the second fire at the school in one week.

Battalion Chief Rod MacDonald calls both incidents “highly suspicious.”

MacDonald says there was a fire in a classroom and a broken window about a week ago at John Henderson Elementary School, at 451 East 53rd Avenue.

“Just a week later, we’ve had another fire in an area where fire should not be occurring, it was behind a large rhododendron in the corner of the school, and that fire spread up the side of the building and got into the roof overhang.”

Fire crews were called out shortly after 9:00 Sunday night.

MacDonald says police may be stepping up patrols in the area.

He adds the damage is not significant enough to close the school.
