Two men charged in murder of Maple Batalia make first court appearance

The family and friends of Maple Batalia were in court this morning when the man accused of killing her appeared before a judge.

Batalia’s loved ones watched quietly as 20-year old Gurjinder Dhaliwal charged with first degree murder sat in the prisoners box.

22-year old Gursimar Bedi charged with manslaughter appeared via video link.

Sergeant Jennifer Pound with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said the Batalia family is exhausted and declined to speak to the media.

But Pound says their strength is remarkable.

“Maple’s mother is finding it hard for the families of those two men. Even through all of this she is struggling with how they may be struggling which speaks volumes to them and the people they are and the family bond they have.”

Dhaliwal and Beti will be back in court December 17th.

A bail hearing will happen in the new year.

They have both been ordered not to contact each other, the Batalia family, or a man Maple Batalia once had a relationship with.
