Vancouver hotels get renos for social housing

VANCOUVER – The B.C. and federal governments are providing $ 116 million to renovate 13 hotels for social housing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Housing Minister Rich Coleman says the single room occupancy suites will provide safe and affordable homes for 900 people, helping those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

He says the work will also restore the heritage value of the buildings, which are 100 years old.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is welcoming the hotel upgrades, saying the work will improve living conditions for many of the city’s most marginalized and vulnerable citizens.

The renovation work will be carried out in partnership with the private sector, through the P3 Canada Fund, and private companies will be asked to submit proposals to design, finance, build and maintain the projects.
