Winter weather helps start house fire

The hazardous materials team was called in Wednesday afternoon to deal with the aftermath of a fire at Granville and 35th, forcing the evacuation of over 20 homes, “It would appear to be a downed power pole in the laneway of 5200 block of Granville. Upon arriving at the scene, we discovered that the energized pole had in fact, ignited an adjacent garage.”

Captain Gabe Roder with Vancouver fire-rescue would not confirm reports the garage was full of mercury and gunpowder.

The evacuation order for the neighbourhood was lifted just before six p.m.
