Filmmaker Frank Darabont looks to have stepped down as showrunner on AMC’s “The Walking Dead” currently in production on its second season says Deadline.
Darabont was one of the key driving forces behind the adaptation of the acclaimed comic, alongside fellow executive producers Robert Kirkman (the comic’s creator) and Gale Anne Hurd. He both wrote and directed the pilot
Darabont reportedly never quite adjusted to the workload of producing a TV series, but talks are ongoing about him staying on in some capacity on the show. The news is a surprise as Darabont was at the show’s Comic-Con panel this past Friday and apparently made no mention of the news.
“The Shield” producer Glen Mazzara was hired last year as his ‘No. 2’ on the show, it’s unknown if he will now step up to replace Darabont. Either way the news hasn’t affected the show’s production which continues on schedule ahead of the show’s season premiere on October 16th.
