Four Scribes Vie For “50 Shades of Grey”

“American Psycho” author Bret Easton Ellis is out, but four other names have emerged as candidates to adapt E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey” into a working feature film script says The Hollywood Reporter.

Karen Croner, Dan Fogelman, Veena Sud and Kelly Marcel have become the final quartet of candidates for the gig which Universal and producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are currently considering.

Croner penned the Meryl Streep starrer “One True Thing”, Fogelman wrote the kid flicks “Bolt” and “Cars 2”, Sud adapted “The Killing” for the U.S. market, and Marcel worked on “Terra Nova” and the upcoming “Saving Mr. Banks”.

None appear to be likely candidates to adapt the story of the torrid love affair between a college student and a twenty-something billionaire with a heavy emphasis on S&M themes.

Around 40 million e-book and print copies of ‘Grey’ have been sold to date.
