A few years ago filmmaker Steven Soderbergh tried and failed to get his Liberace biopic made at a studio. Ultimately, it was made at HBO who will premiere it on the network later this year.
Michael Douglas plays the flamboyant showman, while Matt Damon stars as his young lover. Talking about the telemovie this week, Soderbergh admits he was shocked that no-one wanted to do the film – and this was despite the awards success of “Brokeback Mountain,” and a budget requiring only $ 5 million in financing.
Soderbergh says: “Nobody would make it. We went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay. And this is after ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us.”
It ended up at HBO because; “This is a magnet for attention. The whole package to them looked (to HBO) like a slam dunk. The studios didn’t know how to sell it. They were scared.”
