Starz Cancels “Spartacus” After Next Year

Starz Network has announced the upcoming third season of its flagship series “Spartacus” will be its last. Now going by the official title of “Spartacus: War of the Damned”, the season will premiere January 2013.

Series creator/executive producer Steven S. DeKnight said in a statement “Yet, in the end, the story was best served by rolling all of the remaining action and drama of Spartacus’ journey into one stunningly epic season that will be extremely satisfying for everyone who’s been along for the ride.”

Despite the lost of its title star Andy Whitfield to cancer (he was replaced in the most recent season by Liam McIntyre), “Spartacus” has been a proven ratings performer, disc seller and international hit for the network since 2010. The recent second season entitled ‘Vengeance’ averaged over six million weekly viewers.

Currently in production in New Zealand, the story now has Spartacus and his men amassing major victories against the Romans after the Battle of Vesuvius – increasing the ranks of the rebellion slaves to more than 30,000.

New additions to the cast this season include Todd Lasance as Gaius Julius Caesar, Simon Merrells as Marcus Crassus and Anna Hutchison as Laeta.
