“Thor” star Chris Hemsworth tells The L.A. Times that he’s “really disappointed” that the first film’s director Kenneth Branagh has opted not to direct the sequel.
“Ken built that character, and everything I know about the Thor world I learned while shoulder-to-shoulder with Ken… As long as he’s happy, that’s the thing” says Hemsworth during last weekend’s San Diego Comic Con. He goes onto say “I learned so much from Ken while we built [the first film], so at least I had that time with someone like that. The start of anything creative is the most important period in a way. That’s when the most can go wrong, and Ken made sure we got it right.”
Branagh was invited back to direct the film, which has grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, and seemed keen on the idea initially. However it now seems Marvel’s rush to get the film out by Summer 2013 and get the script process underway has lead to him dropping out.
The 50-year-old filmmaker is keeping busy however and will soon be back on the screen again reprising the title role in the third season of the BBC’s acclaimed Sweden-set detective drama “Wallander”. No word yet if his “Thor” star Tom Hiddleston will also reprise the role of Martinsson in the show. Branagh is also ramping up work with a theater group in his native Belfast.
