Whitney Houston Stars In “Sparkle” Remake

Fifteen year’s since her last onscreen role in 1996’s “The Preacher’s Wife”, Whitney Houston is returning to acting in a remake of “Sparkle” at Sony Pictures says The Hollywood Reporter.

Loosely based on The Supremes, Sparkle follows three sisters that form a successful singing group and then must deal with the fallout of fame and drugs.

Jordin Sparks plays the title character who is the most talented member of this powerful girl group while Houston is playing her indifferent mother. Epps plays a stand-up comedian who gets one of the three sisters hooked on drugs.

Salim Akil will direct from a script he wrote with his wife, Mara Brock Akil. Houston will executive produce with shooting likely to kick off sometime in 2013.
