After 4 years, disgraced Mountie learns his fate Friday

Nearly four years after a young man from Delta was killed by a suspected drunk driver, the off-duty Mountie eventually convicted of obstructing justice, will be sentenced Friday.

Corporal Benjamin Monty Robinson is still on the RCMP’s payroll as he awaits his fate, which will be determined at 10am in New Westminster.

In October of 2008, the now-41-year old left the scene of the crash that killed 21-year old motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson.

There was evidence he’d been drinking before the crash, but he went home and downed two shots of vodka before going back.

In March, Justice Janice Dillon admonished him for deliberately misleading investigators and not trying to help the victim.

Robinson’s superiors say they want to terminate his employment, but current RCMP regulations keep them from even suspending him without pay.
