A downtown building has been damaged and workers sent home after a water pipe burst.

Massive flooding caused chaos at a downtown Vancouver highrise this morning.

Some time overnight, a pipe burst on the 18th floor  of the 32 storey Bentall Tower at Burrard and Dunsmuir, which houses several law firms and the Bank of Montreal.

Several hundred workers were sent home because the power has been shut off below the 18th floor and elevators are only working for tenants above it.

Building administrators say most damage has been contained to the fourth and fifth floors and they believe everything is covered by insurance, but they’re still assessing how much damage has been done.

About two dozen workers spent several hours in the lobby on the main floor this morning waiting for word on when they can get back into their offices.

Marieke Luit and Irene Visser say the building’s water supply was shut down over the weekend.

“Because we noticed when we came in on Monday right? There was oxygen in the pipes.

The two say they made the discovery about 8 in the morning.

Other workers say their access to hot water was also cut off for five hours on friday.

The tower was built in 1974.
