Provincial biologists are debating what to do next to find an invasive species of fish found in Burnaby.
Biologists from the Environment and Forests Ministries headed out to a pond in Burnaby’s Central Park this week. It was the first time since they tried to catch what is believed to be a snakehead fish.
Melinda Yong with Burnaby Parks, which helped in the search, says it was a bit of a reconnaissance mission. She says the team, from Victoria and Surrey, tried various techniques to catch the snakehead, to no avail.
The techniques are those used to catch salmon in fast-flowing streams, a much different environment.
Yong says the biologists are now regrouping. She says the species multiplies quickly and has no natural predators.
It’s unlikely we’ll ever know how it got to be in the Burnaby pond, though she says it’s likely somebody released it.
